Are you sure that you didn't download MS Office? I've done many installations of Open Office and have never needed a product key. Since it's a free download, you won't have a cd key, certificate of authenticity nor a purchase confirmation e-mail as there will not be one.
Go to http://www.openoffice.org and download from there. It sounds like you may have downloaded something different.
