I'm a new user of OpenOffice.org version 2.3, on Windows XP, and this is the first problem I've had with it. I have been reading all the messages from new users with problems I apparently flew right through. Until now, I've had a warm, fuzzy feeling of (unjustified?) competence.

When I first started Writer, it could automatically call up Thunderbird, which is my default email program, by opening a Compose window over the Writer page. Thus encouraged, I tried to use the Mail Merge Wizard to send a Writer test message to three Calc addresses, all my own. But the Wizard couldn't find Thunderbird and it asked for directions to my email program. I tried several times to fill in the same settings that Thunderbird uses, but could never connect. At one time the Wizard was saying that "0 of 2" messages HAD been sent (but I had 3 not 2 addresses in the list), and below that, a line said "0" messages had NOT been sent. None were actually sent, let alone received. At that point the program stops running and must be ended. (No, I'm not sending Microsoft a message about that; I've had quite enough of their NON-support options.)

Now on subsequent tries at Mail Merge trial messages, the Wizard has stopped asking for directions and simply says it can't find any email connection. But my DSLExtreme internet connection is up and running and my ATT.net email works both on-line and through Thunderbird. I kept ATT.net as backup, and because I couldn't face changing my addresses when I got DSL.

Do I need to reinstall from my download files of 2.3? Would that put it back to the initial stage when it could find Thunderbird? But what then? All that first try did was open a Compose box in Thunderbird over the OpenOffice Writer page. Without the Wizard it didn't automatically insert the trial message and send to the list, so it's not Mail Merge. If it goes back to that point, where it asks for directions, should I skip Thunderbird and ATT.net, and try to give it the address of the DSLExtreme server instead?
