You say you're unable to open the file but not which program you had that
problem with. I'm guessing that you were unable to open the file in Word. If
that's the case, when the file was saved as a Word file using OpenOffice,
was the "Automatic file name extension" option checked in the save screen
when the file was saved? If no it may simply be that Word doesn't see the
file because the file name doesn't end with ".doc"

If that's the case try adding ".doc" to the file name or use OpenOffice to
save the file again making certain the "Automatic file name extension"
option is checked.
