Sounds like you are working in a numbered, or bulleted paragraph. If so, what
you are seeing is a floating toolbar related to that context and you can just
move it out of the way.
same thing happens to me with OOo and NeoOffice when working in a table. The
Tables and Borders toolbar keeps popping up and gets in my way...
Ditto inside a table. Just move the toolbar out of your way. I normally park it
at the edge of the screen somewhere.
