I read Solveig Hoagland's article on importing various types of data
into Base, but she does not detail how to do this directly from .txt or
.csv files.
Have already created a new OOo database. Could someone explain to me how to turn these .txt files into Base tables?
Any help will be thankfully appreciated. (BTW: top-posting is OK...)

For the moment the easiest way is this.

Step one
Place all 7 files into a common directory

Step Two
From OpenOffice.org select File > New > Database
On the first page of the new database wizard selct "Connect to existing database"
In the drop down box just below this select "Text"
Follow the prompts of the wizard, select the directory and answer the questions about the layout of the files.
Save this new odb file.
When this file opens the 7 files will appear as 7 tables. This type of odb file has limitations however, and they are not 'imported' rather simply linked to as text files. So how about an actual import.

Step Three
From OpenOffice.org select File > New > Database
On the first page click on "Finish"
Give the new odb file a name and save it.
This is a standard Base file with an embedded relational database.

Step Four
With both odb files open, drag each of the text files as tables from the first odb file to the second. NOTE - you must drop the dragged files onto the table area of the Base wndow. This starts the Copy Table Wizard - you want to copy Structure and Data.
Repeast for all seven files.
When you are done the actual data is now in a Base database. You can setup relations between the tables, query between the tables and create your data input forms and reports as you like.

NOTE 2 - in the next release of OpenOffice.org ( version 2.4 ) there will be an extension ( perhaps more then one ) for actual import and export. The required support within the application is being added, with a very early snapshot build available and the extension itself is under development now...but for the moment the steps I outlined are as simple ( or not ) as it gets.
