Bottom posting has not been universally used, but seems to be the most
common practice here. However, I have seen inexperienced posters
berated for top posting by others who want to impose their own
preferences as rules. My own practice, despite my preference for top
posting, is to follow the method that will be clearest to the preceding
poster. That includes, when possible, reducing the length of quoted
posts to what I consider a polite and usable minimum. Usually that
reduction removes all but the immediately preceding post so there is no
problem sorting out which came first and it's convenient to go directly
to the reply, whether top or bottom posted.
Both top-posting and bottom-posting are applicable standards, each with its
own advantages and ( pace, Dotan) disadvantages. The point is that once one
has been chosen, it should be followed to avoid confusion and a discussion
which could better be devoted to more substantive matters. My understanding
is that this list-serv has been using bottom-posting since its inception ;
surely continuing to do so would not severely inconvenience any posters ?...
