In fact that's only part of the reason. It is also partly to avoid sending the file to *everybody* on this list (several hundred people). By putting the file on a server and providing a *link* to the file (plus possible security code) you make it possible for *only* those people to download it who might want to (or be able to) help. You may not mind how many people receive your file but *they* might mind a lot.
It works the same way as when I tell you that you can download OpenOffice from http://tinyurl.com/2x6a66 The "http://tinyurl.com/2x6a66" is a *link*. It's about 25 bytes. The file you download will be several megabytes. I'm sending you 25 bytes, not several megabytes.
