Since OpenOffice is Free Software, you can't beat the cost.  (What do you mean
I can't get a discount on this?)

Since you apparently want a "set-and-forget" system, you may be a lot better
off having someone set up a Linux system for you.  It will be a lot more solid
over the long term than Microsoft Windows XP due to a number of factors that
are beyond the scope of what I'm writing here.
