There is some question about whether or not OpenOffice.org 2.x can 
work with the "docx" format.  

You currently need an extention or add-on to do the read/write of .docx file 
formats. OpenOffice.org 3.0 should have it as a native function, but
for now, you need to follow the links below.

I know it works, since I have that option in my Save As file format option.

Also the second link shows that Microsoft has a format extention that allows 
previous versions of Word to read/write .docx.
