Yes, provided you don't use the latest file format from Microsoft
Office 2007. Also, Microsoft Office doesn't understand the default
ODF formats, unless you install the Sun ODF plugin.

OpenOffice doesn't need the plugin, as the ODF file formats are
default. The plugin is used with Microsoft Office, to enable it to work
with ODF files. Try saving a file in Writer. You should see that it
saves as .ODT, by default. That is one of the ODF file types.

If you have trouble with using Word and OOo Writer, then just
stick with Word .doc (any version from 95 to 2003). The big problem
with Word's .doc file format is so large. The ODF version of a DOC file
can be easly 1/4 to 1/8 the size.
When in doubt, stick with the .doc format. Then when you get things worked
out, switch to the ODF formats and the filter that allows MS Word to use them.
If you can, then try to get everyone on board with OpenOffice.org instead
of using Microsoft's Suite.

So remember
1) start with a version of .doc
2) switch to ODF with needed filters
3) switch to OpenOffice.org and dump Microsoft all together.
