When you save the file, are you using "Save as" to change the file
type?  Or are you just changing the file extension to .doc.  If the
latter, it will not work.  You should also ensure automatic file
extension is selected.  Since you're running Windows, you might want to
download the free Word viewer from Microsoft.  This will enable you to
see how your documents will look in Word, before sending them.  If you
install the viewer, after OpenOffice, you will have to reset your file
associations for .DOC files, back to OpenOffice.  However, if your
version of OpenOffice is older than 2.3, you might want to install the
latest version, after installing the viewer.  This will also reset the
file associations.

Changing file associations

Right click on file icon
Select Open With > Choose Program...
Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and
choose the desired application.
