OpenOffice, by default, saves in the ISO standard ODF file formats. Since Microsoft refuses to support those formats, you'll have to save in Word or PDF formats. OpenOffice can do both. To save in Word format, use the Save as function and then select the appropriate Word format from the drop down list. Make sure automatic file extension has been selected.
