As you say, it would be a mixed blessing. I'd not want an ancient 
document to suddenly and unexpectedly change appearance just because I 
wanted to alter the appearance of new documents. Sounds a recipe for 
chaos, thinking about it.

OTOH, if it really is a requirement that documents track a time-varying 
format, it wouldn't be so hard to replace automatically the styles.xml 
component of the documents when necessary.

Don't forget it's possible to explicitly import styles from another 
document - this is tucked away on the stylist menu, top-right drop-down 
list (at least on 2.3.1/XP).
