I got the outline issue cleared up, however, I find the TAB (writer) goes further than I want..... something like the equivalent of 12 spaces with the space bar. I would prefer a "tab" of only 6-8 spaces. I've searched all through this thing's tools and other various and sundry areas, but have found nothing useful.
How can I change the size of the tab??

Tabs don't have a size as such, and neither do spaces. You are thinking here in typewriter terms, where everything was based on a common pitch; a word processor is more flexible than that. The tab key will take the typing position on to the next tab position defined for your current paragraph. If you haven't defined any tabs, there are default ones which you can see (as small ticks) in the ruler bar above the display. So the size of a tab depends on where you type it: it can be anything from very little up to the entire page width between margins.

To vary the default spacing of tabs, go to Tools | Options... | OpenOffice.org Writer | General | Settings. Mine are at 1.25 cm (that's about half an inch in old money), which I imagine is the default. But the best way to handle spacing like this is to set your own tabs where you need them. To do this, either click and drag on the ruler bar itself, or go to Format | Paragraph... | Tabs (or right-click | Paragraph... | Tabs) or to right-click | Edit Paragraph Style... | Tabs, as appropriate.

I trust this helps.

If you have tab settings that you use all of the time, I would recommend that you set them with the paragraph formating, and then save them as part of the style settings.
