OpenOffice is a full office suite, comparable to Microsoft Office. Unlike Microsoft Office, it is open source, that is the source code is freely available, and OpenOffice can also be downloaded for no charge. On the other hand, Microsoft Office is proprietary, the source code is not available and you have to pay a significant amount to purchase it. OpenOffice also supports, by default, the ISO standard ODF file formats, which Microsoft refuses to support. You can also use OpenOffice to work with Microsoft Office files and also create PDF's of your documents. There are many other advantages.
