What you need to do is create a header or footer and then put the page
number in it.
Now for the details:
Creating a header: Click "Insert" to open its menu, and click on Header in
the menu to open a submenu. (It probably contains only one listing: Default.
Click the Default setting. A header will appear at the top of every page with
the cursor flashing at the left margin. If that is where you want your page
numbers, put the page number there (second paragraph below). If you want the
page numbers in the middle or on the right side, use the Tab key to move to
where you want the page numbers.
Creating a footer: Click "Insert", click Footer in its menu, and click
Default in its submenu. Move the cursor to where you want it using the Tab
key.
Creating the page numbers: Click "Insert", and then click Fields from its
menu. Click Page number from the submenu. That will place the page number on
each page.
One warning: Click "Edit" and find "Field name" in its menu. If this is
checked, all of your page numbers will be changed to "Page" which is the name
of the field being used to number the pages. So, always make sure this one
menu item is always UNCHECKED.

show you how to alternate where the page number is located in the header or
footer so that the "right" page has the number on the right and the "left"
page has the number on the left.
