downloaded X11 from Apple's website, but when I tried to install it, was told that a newer version was installed on my machine. X11User.pkg has been downloaded. I cannot find anything resembling X11 in the Library Receipts

What do I do?

I would be curious as to the URL you used to download X11 from Apple, IIRC X11 for Tiger was only available on the DVD or the 1.1.3 update. Thus it is likely that the version you downloaded was for Panther. Perhaps that is the source of the version message you are seeing. Now, as i recall, a default Tiger install left several [unused] installer packages on the drive - perhaps /Applications/ Utilities/Packages, though my memory is a little foggy there. Anyway, the proper version of X11User.pkg would be there. Since it's likely i didn't remember the path right, put it into a Spotlight search. The 1.1.3 update IS downloadable [ http://apple.com/support/ downloads/x11update2006113.html ], though it is marked as requiring an existing X11 install. Nonethless, it wouldn't hurt to try. If that doesn't work, you'll need to borrow a Tiger install disk or somebody can send you the package sub rosa.

I say, put Schroedinger in the box and see how HE likes it.
