Nothing is 100% compatible with MS Office; not even newer versions of MS Office. Part of the problem is that MS keeps secret its data formats so the OO authors have to guess at how some things are done. Most documents will happily transfer from MS Office to OpenOffice. Macros in VBA won't work and will need to be re-written. A lot of work is being done to rectify this situation. There's a guide to conversion at http://documentation.openoffice.org/HOW_TO/various_topics/VbaStarBasicXref.pdf OpenOffice can access MS Access databases. See http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Connecting_to_Microsoft_Access Nothing but Publisher can open Publisher files. OpenOffice doesn't really have an equivalent to Publisher; many people seem to use Scribus which is also free.
