..._do_ as the Romans do, not _speak_ as the Romans speak.  And anyway, many 
of us are not in Rome - nor yet in the USA.  I am quite prepared to 
understand a northern American, or rather, attempt to, but not to speak 
American.  

And besides, it can be very confusing.  I once had an email asking me to check 
the check and then check the box.  It took me several moments to work out 
that the writer wished me to check the cheque and then tick the box.
