You don't have to download anything. The Windows Xp version won't work
under Linux, but any Linux distribution comes with OpenOffice
prepackaged and integrated with the rest of the system.

Choosing the best version of Linux depends on other things: what you
need to do with it, how much online support you need and similar
factors, what kind of special hardware you have...

These questions are much more important than which linux works best
with OpenOffice. They all work more or less the same and OOo is
included, so find the answers to those other questions first.

The only exception to what I just said may be the support for .docx
files. From that point of view, the easiest solution right now may be
to use OpenSuse, which has an OpenOffice with the .docx translator
already integrated, but I'm not so up to date here.

But .docx, aka OpenXML, is such a dumb and evil idea in and by itself
that you want to stay as far from it as possible, so why bother? To
