as far as I am concerned, the Quick Unicode Tool does indeed resolve the
problem for Windows XP. You are, however, quite right about Vista ; when
I
try to open the «quick100.exe» file on my Vista Business setup, I
receive
the following message :
«Cannot create the file 'quick.exe'. According to Windows the reason

You might try installing it as administrator.
I know I was able to install it.
But when I tried using it, the results were mostly invalid. I can't now
remember exactly what was wrong: I think I remember that one thing that
was wrong was that some of the numeric input keys didn't work. I removed
the program, installed it again, and the same thing happened.
Of course, Windows Vista has been upgraded since then so perhaps you
have encountered a new problem. I may try again on my Vista machine when
I get home tonight.

Jim, I am (as far as I know) logged in as an administrator on my Vista
setup, but sometimes, for reasons that I do not pretend to understand (I'm
far from a Vista expert), I get messages of the type «Access denied», even
though I think I ought to have it. Thus, for example, whenever I boot to
Vista, I get a message from Secunia's PSI to the effect that the programme
can only be run by an Administrator and that I should log with
administrative privileges and run it again. Go figure ! In any event, if you
do succeed in installing and running it on your home machine and it works,
I'm sure I'm not the only list member who would find the details of
interest....

I hope this doesn't just confuse the issue.
To use special characters on both XP and Visya I would normally use the
character map (>Start >Accessories >System Tools > Character map). I
have found a tick and a cross in the Wingdings font (I believe this is
on all Windows applications) almost at the bottom and I normally copy
and paste from this to any application that needs them. Is this a
satisfactory workround until OOo can be fixed?
Thanks
Rob
