You can scan an image directly into OOo Writer (Insert|Picture|Scan),
but for OCR you'll need other software, which may come with your scanner.
Some scanner OCR software will send the resulting text to M$ Word, but
won't let you specify OOo as the target.
On the other hand, the software that comes with the Brother MFC-440CN
will recognize OOo as the target. It won't use the .odt format, so you
have to use .rtf or even .doc.
That particular multifunction machine isn't mine and I didn't have time
to play with it much after I set it up. I think the OCR app was from
OmniPage and the rest of the scanner software was from PaperPort.
