| Simply open the .xls file using OpenOffice, then when in OpenOffice select
| file > save as, and select the .ods file format from the drop down list.

In addition to Paul's answer, you might want to check which file format
your employer has used for this file. Check the file name extension and
if it is ".xls" you should be able to open it with OOo (OpenOffice.org)
Calc. However, if the file name extension is ".xlsx" you may have fallen
prey to one of Microsoft's "lock users in" scams. Currently the only
software which can open/save Microsoft's OOXML format files is produced
by Microsoft. Development work is underway to add this ability to OOo,
but due to Microsoft's patents and devious tactics in this area, it is
impossible to say when or if OOo will achieve full compatibility with
this file format.

If the above is the reason you are having difficulty opening the Excel
file, In the short term I would suggest two options:

1. Ask your employer to use the Excel "Save As..." option and send you
the file in the original ".xls" format, so that you can open it in OOo.

2. Ask your employer to cough up several hundred dollars and buy you a
copy of Office 2007 ;)

Hope this helps.

Dave
