No, OpenOffice.org does not work the same as Microsoft Excel or Access.
It will open and save in both formats but she will not be able to follow
her homework step by step.

First you need to check which version of Office they use at her school,
as Microsoft Office up to 2003 does not work the same as Office 2007.
Then you should probably try to purchase the identical product. Do this
for your daughters sanity.

If you must buy MS Office, you should be able to get an educational discount through the school.


If this seems unreasonable to you then you should complain to the school
about Vendor Lockin which they may be unwittingly perpetuating:
