OK, you're saying that you click someplace in a Writer table, then select the "Table" option of the main menu bar, select its "Select" option, and have no active options? That's *very* strange. What happens if you click-and-drag from the top left cell of the table to the bottom right, for instance? Do the cells show as selected then? If so, you should now also be able to use the "Sort" option under "Table" from the menu bar. As before, make sure you have all the cells selected. The only other thing I can think might affect this is having the document set as read-only, but although that might perhaps disallow the sort, it certainly shouldn't interfere with selection.
