Hello Patty.
From your description, I think you have, by accident enable some
comment or feature. I personally have not seen this indicator but it
could be a formatting code or something that was pasted into the document.
It may be a style that is turned on. When you put your cursor past this
point, you should see some change in the styles dialog (F11). Check the
different dialogs.
It is things like this that I want "Reveal Codes", like in WordPerfect
for. Easy to find out what is happening.
