OpenOffice can open Excel spreadsheets, other than those created by Office 2007 in the new .XLSX format. If that is what you're trying to open, you'll have to arrange to have it saved in an older format. If this doesn't help, please come back here with further information about precisely what you're doing, results etc. BTW, you didn't have to purchase OpenOffice, as it's a free download from www.openoffice.org.
