I'm moving from FrameMaker to OOo, so the notion of paragraph and character styles is familiar to me. However, the notion of linking styles so that child styles inherit the attributes of their parent that they don't explicitly change is new to me. I'm looking for some advice on whether to use this feature and, if so, how. Solveig Haugland's "OpenOffice.Org 2 Guidebook" has virtually nothing to say about when styles should be linked and when the should not, and OpenOffice.org's "Writer Guide" is no better. Does anybody have any guidance about the proper use of this feature? Are there places on the net that discuss it?

Somewhat relatedly, Writer predefines some style names I'm used to defining myself. FrameMaker doesn't reserve any style names, so I already know what I mean by "Footnote" and "Footer" and "Header", etc. -- I created them. My understanding is that I can't use these names for my own styles, but I can redefine these existing styles to have the characteristics I want. Is this a good idea? That is, should I leave the characteristics of the predefined style names alone and instead create my own style names (e.g., "MyFootnote", "MyHeader", etc.), or should I go ahead and modify the characteristics of the predefined style names so they behave the way I'm used to them behaving?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Scott
