Yes, get the originator of the email to resend the files in .DOC
format. They will have many issues with this, especially as .DOCX
is not widely supported (even by earlier versions of Microsoft
Office).
Here is some further reading on why you should stay away as much as
possible from .DOCX files in favor of OpenDocument (OpenOffice Native
format) and ask everybody to do the same:

Please note that the reasons mentioned there would remain valid even
if .DOCX became apparently supported in OpenOffice.

I believe in OpenOffice.org and OpenDocument Formats but below is a link
that is a negative view. She has her points, but she fails to include that
the
ISO standards committee states that the file format standards cannot be
controlled by a for profit company. Microsoft "owns" and controls their
document formats and will not allow anyone to have all if it so their will
be a full function competitor to MS's suite. Read it, and see what is
said.

I use OOo 99% of the time and 95% or more of the MS Word's (.doc) users
could use it to without any loss of function. It is the 1000's of extra
features
that MS Word had that make it a more robust software, but the number of
users that need those extra function are so small. MS does not even
document
those extra functions well enough for the average user to know what they
really are.
Why would anyone want to have an active spreadsheet or database within a
text document? MS alluded that Word can do this. Do you need Writer to be
a WYSIWYG web page creator and publisher? Word includes it, but if you ever
tried it, you will see why you would want to use a package that is made
specifically
for that task.
OpenDocument formats are still growing in their abilities. One day it will
be
even better. The article states that the W3C model and standards may be the
next big ISO for documents. OpenOffice.org will then include it as quickly
as
possible, while MS will try to recreate it and then want its "new" format to
be used instead of the next big ISO standard alone with not supporting the
current ISO standards.
I have MS Office 2003 with the file filters to use the .docx format. I have
it
for the 1% or less documents that come across my computer that
OpenOffice.org
currently not read. I usually convert them to the standard .doc format and
then work with it in OOo.
I was my local library last month where they had new computers installed.
All of the users that day who wanted to use Word nearly gave up because of
the crap that was done to its navigation setup. The library's support
person
was just as upset as the users, since she has to walk the users through the
usage of Word. I was told that since the County was paying for, as
"supporting"
the computers, the library had to use what the County told them to use, i.e.
Office 2007.
I do not like Microsoft, but until I get a Linux computer, I have to live
with
its OS. I know of one author that has dumped MS's OS for Linux and is
writing his books (3-5 a year) using OpenOffice.org as his wordprocessor.
He even uses a different keyboard setup instead of QWERTY standard. He
could not do that in Win98, XP, etc..
Well enough of my venting.
I will stick to OOo, and will promote to all who will listen ( and some who
will not )
