Scott,
I have just tested Andrew's suggestion and it works, but I do not
think it is very easy to use and if really the bug I mentioned
yesterday has been resolved for version 2.4 (due in March 08) you are
better off waiting for it.

The problem is that the name of the numbered item cannot be controlled
(or at least I did not figure out how to do that). This name
unfortunately is the key to sort the references when you need to
insert them. So, if you create a new document and insert the variables
one after the other the name kind of makes sense (you get [1, [2,
[3...) but if you insert the variable a posteriori or move the
bibliography items around you are in trouble.

If you don't mind the pain of having to find out the correct reference
by means of trial and error here's how you can proceed:
1. Follow Andrew's instructions and create a variable (I called mine BiblioRef)
2. Insert this variable in the the square brackets in your bibliography list.
3. when you want to insert a reference, place the mouse where you want
the number to appear and then ctrl+F2 > Reference tab > [name of your
numbering variable, BiblioRef in my case]. Select the entry number
corresponding to the sequence in the bibliography (as I said you may
need some trial and error here) and select Numbering as format. Click
Insert.

Cheers,

Michele
