but I really want to have both lists available to me at the same time.
a) Configure the formatting toolbar to display:
* paragraph style (Apply style)
* font name;
* font size;
* font color;
* anything else you want to know about current formatting data;
* Then keep that toolbar permanently displayed at the top of your screen.
b) Setup stylist to display the applied styles for character styles.
When you first create a document, you may have to switch stylist to
hierarchical, and paragraph styles, Just be sure to switch back to
applied character styles, before you continue typing away.
I just tossed a screenshot of what my setup looks like to

This is a pretty good workaround, but one problem I have with it is that
it still requires you to be specifically aware that it's a Paragraph
style you're after, when the Character styles are currently being
displayed in Stylist and may have same/similar names. Also, you have to
click to get the dropdown paragraph style list display, then click the
selection, rather than just clicking on the paragraph style you want
from Stylist. I'm also not sure how the subset of the "Automatic" list
is chosen for direct display in the list -- certainly it includes styles
that are not necessarily applied in the current document, like three
Heading levels. Do you know? Does it always include all applied styles?
If you ever need the "More" selection, it switches the Stylist over to
Paragraph mode with the "Automatic" list, so again you have to be
careful about what mode the Stylist is in. With only applied styles
(both paragraphs and characters) in the same display, I think it would
be easier to keep things straight. Clearly it would be very low on the
priority list, though! Worth submitting an RFE anyway, maybe?
