Dear Users,

Copy ("burn") the file you downloaded onto a CD and use that on the "safe" computer. No internet connection is required during the installation. Just answer "already registered" when the installer asks you to register. Use whatever software you would normally use to burn CDs - Nero, perhaps.

If you can't create a CD you can order one from one of the suppliers listed on the OpenOffice download web site. Please note that this site contains a list of possible suppliers. None of them is connected in any way to OpenOffice.org which makes no guarantees or recommendations. Any problems you may experience must be settled completely between you and your chosen supplier. Expect to pay not much more than USD 10 to cover the cost of creating the CD plus P&P. Alternatively, OpenOffice is frequently distributed on the CDs/DVDs that come with computer magazines.

If your "safe" computer can't read CDs then I think your only option is to connect the two computers to form a simple private network. Something like the non-free PCAnywhere, or the free VNC plus a crossover cable, should do the job. The free VNC is at http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/index.html

Note that it is entirely legal under the licence for you to use OpenOffice on as many computers as you like for whatever purpose you like. Feel free to give it to friends, colleagues and relatives too. Possibly on the CD you created ;-)

There is also a version of OpenOffice that runs directly from a USB key without installing anything at all on the computer running it. See http://portableapps.com for details. They also have portable Thunderbird (e-mail) and Firefox (web browser) as well as other goodies. All free. (No, I don't work for them.)
