At the momemt Open Office cannot open the new Microsoft 2007 file
types. Perhaps you can have your source resave his document into the
older .doc, .xls, or whatever and send that to you.
Meanwhile filters for the new Micro$oft formats are being worked on.
There has been some success with some of the Linux versions of
OpenOffice in creating filters, such as from Novel. These are not
generally available yet for other flavors of Open Office.
