I suspect that when you saved the file you had not checked the
"Automatic File Name Extension" box in the save dialogue and you are
using a variant of Windows. This OS has to be told what type of file you
are expecting it to open. Rename the file to add the appropriate
extension .odt, .doc, whatever and the system _should_ be able to cope.
