Subject: Re: List Proposal [Was: James K., may you please stop
sending answers without meaningful subjects?]
As a very new newbie here I thought I'd add my viewpoints for what
they're worth, because I think your proposal is a good one with the
exception of not being able to get further information. Perhaps to
get further information they would have to sign up, dunno right now.
Personally, I got to this list via searching for OOo with my
newsreader. This, I had *no* way to know that it was a mailing list
based operation. I suspect many newbies encounter the same thing.

When two of my posts still hadn't appeared I finally got curious
enough to go reading messages that pertained to list maintenance,
whatever, looking for reasons, and that's when I discovered 1. You must
use a real e-mail address and 2. you had to sign up.
Once I got all that straightened out and inspected the nntp refs on
the OO site, things finally became a little clearer. It still makes
me nervous that I have to use my real e-mail address to post,

I have to wonder how many newbies submit a couple of questions, get
no responses, and simply go away because the newsgroup "doesn't work".

Twayne

I'm reasonably happy with the software and used to reading
manuals/pdfs/etc but I still have M$ 2007 around to deal with that
crowd. I try not to be a bigot. and I AM an M$ partner. I have
discovered however that several people of my acquaintance do not like
giving out a "Real" address for lists. The one I use has been my main
address for many years as Y!Mail does a fair job of pre-filtering for me
as does GMail so I don't get too much [EMAIL PROTECTED] I NEVER give my ISP address
to anybody. I even have a separate address that appears to be secure (So
Far) for various banks that is not my ISP. That gives the added
advantage that I can change ISP's with impunity. No lost mail.
The thing about Yahoo and GMail is however that they are WEB based with
POP3 capability. You can set up a throw away address: Yahoo instructions
here:
http://us.f539.mail.yahoo.com/ym/dea?YY=67335&y5beta=yes&y5beta=yes
I have several Yahoo & GMail addresses besides the one I use here. The
Additional trow-away capacity is very user friendly.
Regarding Open Source & the culture in General:
Probably quite a few go away. I was a newbie once and the - How to
phrase without offending - None Intended - Linux / open source community
has been Difficult to understand. As a mainframer I was used to posting
on lists and being pointed to a manual section and maybe and example if
somebody had a no-proprietary one that their employer didn't mind being
shared, or a Pseudo Code if the actual source was "Classified" .. On
many Open Source lists you get a RTFMS!! answer. Which is as
insulting as it might sound for those who don't understand the acronym.
("Read The Manual" being the operative portion) .
Not here I'm happy to say but it is common. In general the "Please
Contribute" phrase seems to mean Participte on the list & help us out so
the programmers can figure out what you need to beat the Evil Empires.
It still Feels Like. "Learn how to Program & BTW: the Paypal Link is
here:" I know that mostly that isn't what is meant but it felt that way
as a newbie and it still niggles at the back of my mind. The funny part
is that the official M$ communications are harder to deal with than Open
Source even while they try to stave off the Open Source "invasion". but
being regarded as stupid because we haven't found the correct portion of
the manual doesn't help some days :-)
Hopefully - this is taken constructively. - It is meant that way.
