Hello I suppose you upgraded Leopard to 10.5.1. Try to start X11 (from Programs or Applications > Utilities) before starting OpenOffice.org. If this doesn't help, you might consider installing the Aqua version of OpenOffice.org, but this is still in its developing stages and not suited for 'serious' production work. It runs fina on my MB Pro.
