Hello I am using Open office version 2.3. Am very pleased with it. My problem

vista operating system. Thanks Frank Finnell
OpenOffice can open *doc* format but not *docx* (Microsoft's latest, for
Office 2007). It may be that when you installed OpenOffice you chose not
to make it the "default" program for handling Word documents. If so you
need to change the "associations" for the document types in question -
Excel, Word, Powerpoint. Here's an extract form the Help in Writer:
==== begin quote =======
To change the association of Microsoft Office file name extensions to
open the files either in OpenOffice.org or in Microsoft Office, using
Microsoft Windows:
1.
Exit OpenOffice.org and the OpenOffice.org Quickstarter.
2.
Run the OpenOffice.org Setup program:
Click the Windows *Start* button, choose *Control Panel*, click
*Add or Remove Programs*, select the OpenOffice.org 2.2 entry,
click *Change*.
3.
In the OpenOffice.org Setup, check the *Modify* option and click
*Next* until you see the file types page.
4.
Select or deselect the file types. Click *OK* and complete the
OpenOffice.org Setup program.

Alternatively you can do the same thing via Windows Explorer; see the
Windows Help under File Associations for details.
Having made the relevant file associations, double clicking on a
Word/Excel/Powerpoint attachment within an E-mail will fire up
OpenOffice which will then open the document.
