This is quite possible. http://download.openoffice.org/680/ is the web
page where you will find the latest developer builds. I am fairly certain
that these builds are probably still Alpha rather than Beta. I would not
recommend using this, but the choice is yours.
The current version is 2.3.1. And like you say, in a few months that will
be replaced by 2.4.0. However, when 2.4.0 comes out, it will install over the
top of 2.3.1 updating the files that need updating and adding any additional
files that come with 2.4.0 (if any). There are no plans to change the look of
the GUI, so I would recommend you use 2.3.1 until 2.4.0 becomes stable.
http://qa.openoffice.org/ is the web page you will probably want to start
at. OOo would be delighted for you to contribute to the quality assurance of
OOo. Instructions on how to get started are on this web page.
