G'day, Ray.

Yes. Free as in both "Free beer" and as in "Free
speech", although as "Not a computer person" the "Free
beer" part is what will interest you most.

It will run on vista, and should do a very good job on
xp word documents. To be readable from word, the
documents must be saved in word format and not the
native open office format, this will generate a
warning, which you can ignore.

Big - about 1.5 gigabytes

If your daughter can use word, she can use it, and
probably teach you!

No.

Install the whole thing. You will only use writer for
the word stuff, but you can also work on other things,
like excell spreadsheets, should the need arrive. My
wife uses this program to work on word and excel items
from her work as a school teacher, and she is also not
a "Computer person".

Download the software from http://www.opeoffice.org
and give it a try. If you don't like it, you can
always delete it. Good luck!

Colin.
