Interesting Russell,
Can OOo read the "Save as" .odt which would be editable?

retrieve my text?
Hi Walter
This is a bit unclear. Is the file a .pdf, when you say it is
Acrobat Reader? OOo is unable to edit .pdf files, though it can
write them.

Sorry Claude, do you mean if you generate an .odt and then export as
.pdf? I presume the .odt would be editable, but it looks as though
Walter was trying to open a .pdf. John Meyer seems to agree with my
assessment.
Actually I just tried opening a .pdf in Kword and Abiword on gentoo
linux. The latter seems particularly able to display the .pdf
formatting. I then saved it as an .odt from Abiword and OOo opened it
very well. This was a simple text .pdf file, but it shows that the
concept of .pdf being "secure" and uneditable (at least without a full
version of Adobe Acrobat) is no longer valid.
"Secure", no. But given the ubiquitous nature of the Acrobat format, it
seems to be one of the top line read only file formats for the time
being. And if you're worried about somebody forging your pdf
documents you may want to go with a second line defense, such as keeping
the pdfs on a secured read-only, off site media.
