You mentioned you were typing a list. This may mean that each line is a separate paragraph and what you are seeing between items in this list is not double-spacing but instead the normal extra spacing that you have set to appear between paragraphs. To fix this, end each line with Shift-Return rather than an plain ordinary Return. This will insert a line-end at the end of each line rather than a paragraph end.
Note, for general use, spacing is controlled as part of the paragraph settings. So you could highlight the text area that is double-spaced then open Format -> Paragraph... and select the tab “Indents & Spacing”. Then set the line-spacing box to “Single” and set the “Above paragraph” and “Below paragraph” boxes to 0.00.
