Let me place an American vote for "fridge" which is so self-explanatory
that any American should recognize it. As for "biro" for ballpoint pen,
that might not be so obvious. "Hoover" on the other hand is either
American or I'm giving away my age. Like the Trash 80 and luggable
discussion.

I don't know about NZ and OZ but my experience is that "hoover", "biro",
"fridge" etc. are peculiarly British. Americans don't seem to use those
words at all and they are certainly not used in Europe.
But I myself would still not apply the term "PC" to a Mac. Perhaps I ought
to
relax more. :-(
I wouldn't either, which just proves the power of IBM's [erstwhile]
marketing muscle.
