I need to create two styles for formatting standard four-choice test questions;
one for the stem and one for the answers. The only difference is that each will
have a hanging indent, but at different distances, and the stem style will be
auto-numbered. Here is an example of what the question will look like (> = tab,
numbers are applied with bullets and numbering):
1.>This is the stem of the question and it will have a hanging
indent like this at .3 inches (21.6 points). There will be a
tab set at .3 inches also, so the number will be flush left
and the tab will move the start of the text so that it lines
up with the indent. To accomplish this I set the indent to
21.6 points and the first line to -21.6 points, and a tab
to 21.6 points.
(A)> this is the first answer, and the indents will be the
same as the stem style, except an extra 21.6 in
(B)> and the first tab for the answer style will be set to
43.2 points.
(C)> Because some answers are short enough I also
created tabs at 140 points and 159 points so that
I can run A and C on one line and B and D on
another line.
(D)> another answer
The problem I am having is that after setting up the styles as above, the
number is indented like this:
1.> This is the stem of the question and it ought to have
a hanging indent, which it would if I could get the stupid
number flush left.
I have tried everything I can think of but nothing will make that number move
to the left margin.
More problems that are probably related: I created the tabs and indents for the
styles as stated above. After applying the style the tabs are not appearing
where they are supposed to be. If I go into Format Paragraph I find that the
tabs are set to 40 points, 160 points and 180 points. I have no idea where
these tab settings are coming from. I delete the tabs and close the window,
then double click the style to reapply the style (which has tabs at 43.2, 140
and 159 points). Then I go back into Format Paragraph and the tabs are back to
40, 160 and 180 points. So then I select the entire paragraph and apply default
(Ctrl-Shift-Spacebar), then reapply the style. I still get 40, 160 and 180
points. I also tried setting the paragraph to some other style and then
reapplying the answers style. No matter what I do the tabs remain at 40, 160
and 180 points. What the hell?
Not that it should make any difference, but the source of the text was a merge
from a database. The database in question holds all data in plain text format -
can't even format with bold, italic, etc. So when the text came in it was
virgin unformatted text.
I hope someone has some suggestions, because this is driving me nuts.
