After you download the package, you have to install it, by double
clicking on the downloaded file. Did you do this?
During the installation process, there's one panel where you're asked if
you want OpenOffice to be the default application for Microsoft Office
files. Leave the boxes selected. Also, OpenOffice does not yet work
with the new Office 2007 file formats, so anyone using it will have to
save in an older format, so that you can open the files.
