This seems to be a really stupid problem, but after installing the software, I can't find an exe to establish a Word/Writer screen, Excel screen or Powerpoint screen. The file containing the installation files does not show one. The software does open existing files.
I had a Microsoft Office 2007 trial version on the PC that had expired. Could
there be a confusion?

No, there should be no confusion.

Have you actually installed the software or only downloaded it? Installation is a 3 step process:
1. Download the installer program
2. Run the installer program. This will create a folder containing folders and files one of which is "setup.exe". 3. Run "setup.exe". Normally you *don't* have to do this yourself because it happens automatically when #2 is finished. This step then creates a folder, typically in the C:\Program Files\... path, which contains the actual software. This step also creates entries in your Start>All Programs menu from where you can run the individual components - Calc, Writer etc. It typically does *not* create icons on your desktop because the authors believe this is littering. Once this step is complete you can delete the installer from #1 and the folders & files from #2. Depending on how you answered the questions during this (#3) step there might also be an icon in your System Tray (near the clock). This is the Quickstarter. Right click on it to select the type of document you want to create. You can also install the Quickstarter yourself after installation nof the main software. To do this run Writer and go to Tools>Options>OpenOffice.org>Memory. Tick the box labelled "Load OpenOffice.org during system start-up". The Quickstarter icon will appear and will reappear when you reboot the system.
