OpenOffice runs happily on Vista. The problem may be with Microsoft's
new document formats. If the documents are in Microsoft Office 2007
(OOXML) format then OpenOffice cannot read them. A new version of
OpenOffice, due in September, will be able to read these files.
You can get the free ODF plugin that enables MS Office 2007 to read and
write OpenOffice documents. It's at
http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/index.jsp
Microsoft has just released a "compatibility pack" that enables older
versions of its own Office suite to read its own newer files (!!!). You
can get it at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en
Please note that none of the Microsoft Office data formats, regardless
of version, conforms to International (ISO) standards whereas all
OpenOffice (ODF) documents do.
