OpenOffice does not currently support .DOCX files. However, if all you
want to do is be able to read and perhaps cut & paste the contents into
another document, you may be able to use the free Microsoft Word Viewer
and Compatibility Pack. Please note, installing the Word Viewer will
change the file associations for Word documents, so you'll want to
change them back.

Changing file associations
Right click on file icon
Select Open With > Choose Program...
Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and
choose the desired application.
