Firstly, you have sent email to a mail list but are not subscribed to 
it. There is a high chance of not seeing responses.

It looks as though you haven't installed OOo, just downloaded it.  
When you say you "clicked on writer", it looks as though you're just 
starting the installation process - it will ask where to unpack the 
files, and then run a 'setup' program guiding you through the 
procedure. Accept the defaults; but read and think carefully before 
answering the part that will ask about what you want to do about 
opening microsoft (Word, etc) files.

Assuming you're running windows, the program will put entries onto 
your start menu (no desktop shortcuts) to run the various components.

There is various documentation at documentation.openoffice.org, as 
well as the help file (press F1)
