Judging from their contents, Sun contains independent-language words
having to do with the Sun Organization and Soffice contains words likely
to appear in Soffice help files. These are words that might not appear
in the supplied US English or British English or any other English
spelling dictionary.
The idea of making these dictionaries independent is that they will be
available regardless of language. There is really not much reason why
you shouldn’t paste all their contents into your main dictionary if you
wish. Or just blow them away if you want. I agree that their inclusion
in OpenOffice.org isn’t very helpful.
But extra dictionaries can be helpful, and you can create them.
For example, if you are writing a book on East-Asian musical
terminology, you might find there are a lot of words you will only need
for that book and related material. Accordingly it might be better to
create a new East-Asian music dictionary for this extra terminology, and
turn off that dictionary for normal use.
Similarly, if you are required to use particular spellings of words for
a particular project, you might make up a dictionary using the project
name, and place it first in the list with the oddly-spelled words in it.
This allows you to spell-check the project properly without messing up
your regular dictionary.
