You can change the colours of some of these things at Tools | Options...
| OpenOffice.org | Appearance | Custom colors. But I don't think you
can do exactly what you ask: it doesn't seem to be possible to
distinguish headers and footers, for example.

Yes, it does help. I wish it were able to distinguish between
headers/footers and allowed one to change the style of the lines, still
whatever is there is pretty useful.
